DescriptionThe base of this lamp is circular and contains the oil that burns the wick, producing a flame. The latter is encircled by a glass cylinder, itself protected by metal bars. The air keeping the combustion alive is supplied from above through a central chimney. The heat and smoke from the flame also go through the chimney. The wire sieve surrounding the top of the lamp and chimney is there to disperse heat and thus prevent that outside combustible gas (like methane) overheat and explode. The sieve is protected by vertical bars as well. On top is a hook to hang the lamp.
Signedstamped in three places: DELEUIL / A PARIS
FunctionThe safety lamp enabled miners to carry a light without the danger of igniting the methane gas found in coal mines. Clanny had invented a safety lamp a few years before Davy, but it was cumbersome. Later, Clanny invented this model, for which he borrowed the wire sieve from Davy.
