Bibliography
DescriptionThe instrument consists of a clock mechanism driving a vertical recording drum. Above is a conical pendulum, used to slow the movement down. It made a complete rotation once every second. Two styluses were used to record the wind data coming from the outside instrument sensor. (Both are incomplete.) On the right of the instrument was attached the rod that was going straight up, through the cabinet and up to the instrument sensor outside of the observatory. It was this rotation, mechanically modified, that was measured and recorded with the styluses on the vertical drum.
The chart on the drum, mentioning the date of May 4, 1960 was one of the last recordings made by this instrument.

FunctionThis instrument, invented by the Richard brothers in the 1880s, was used to record wind velocity directly. This here is only the recording device. The instrument sensor was put outside of the observatory tower. It consisted of a six-bladed windmill that was kept facing the wind by a split-tail wind vane.
ProvenanceFrom the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory. It was retrieved from the BHO in June 1960 by David P. Wheatland.
