DescriptionA water pump made of brass and glass consisting of a glass cylinder with a piston controlled by a brass handle that is connected to a tube going straight down from its bottom, and another near its top connected to a spigot letting the liquid into an inverted conical glass vessel.

There is a brass column that holds another conical vessel at a greater height, and there is a removable tube that can be connected to the top of the spigot and leads straight up before turning around to lead into the upper vessel. Whether the water is let into the higher or lower vessel is controlled by a stopcock on the spigot.

The pump rests on a wooden plank that is screwed to the sides of a wooden trough with metallic lining.

Curatorial RemarksThe morer ecent pictures do not show the tube leading to the upper vessel. It is now missing.
FunctionThis is a device that demonstrates the different amounts of effort required to raise water to two different heights. The pump draws water from the trough underneath, and can raise it to one of the vessels depending on whether the valve by the spigot is open or closed, which could be changed during the operation of the pump.
