          DescriptionThis is a Neubauer-type haemacytometer of the American standard form. The counting chamber platform is a rectangular glass plate with supporting ribs to hold the cover slip. Some surfaces are mirrored. There are two graduated pipettes attached to rubber tubes. One has a larger bulb than the other. The mouth pieces are bone or ivory. The rubber is red.

          The apparatus is stored in a wooden box with a hinged lid. The interior is lined in green velvet. The exterior is covered in black leather embossed with a pattern.

          The lid is marked: AMERICAN STANDARD HAEMACYTOMETER / WITH/ LEVY COUNTING CHAMBER.

          FunctionThe haemacytometer is a device for counting blood corpuscles. The name is also applied to similar devices with counting chambers that are used for determining the number of cells per unit volume of a suspension.
