DescriptionRectangular plug resistance box consisting of two rows of five brass blocks, bridged at one end, and underneath which is a coil connecting each block to the next. Between each pair of blocks is a removeable brass plug. There are also two metal binding posts at each end. The resistances are marked 1, 10, 100, and 1000 ohms.

Curatorial RemarksThe "LG" symbol may refer to L.G. TIllotson, famous telegraphic equipment maker of the late 19th century.
FunctionSuch an instrument is used to control the resistance of electric conductors. For a short general description and other images, go to the following website.
The series of brass blocks are connected to one another with the coils underneath. When the plugs are all in, the resistance is negligible. When one or more plugs are removed, the resistance of that or these plugs are introduced into the electric current passing through the box.
