DescriptionA rectangular bakelite case, tall and thin, rests atop a slightly broader base, the edges of which are beveled. The nameplate of the device is centered in the front.
Sliding into the top of the case is (half of) a taller, thinner bakelite box -- it only has a bottom, a back, and a top. Covering the bottom and approximately two third of the top is a kind of sponge. Strapped (twice) to both the sponge and the bakelite is an H-shaped glass tube. Running up along each of the two vertical components of the tube is a thin wire. The wire coils before it connects to the bottom of a binding post fixed within the top of the box. The two binding posts emerge from the top of the box, the left is labeled '+' and the right is labeled '-'.
In top-right corner of case: the outline of a triangle, which signifies it was used in the Physics department at Harvard.

FunctionThe standard cell is used as a reference voltage when measuring electrical bridges with a potentiometer. According to the markings of a panel, the standard voltage of this cell is 1.01837 volts.
