AccessoriesThree dated Tolles objectives: 1/2" Nov. 18, 1860, 1/4" Dec. 23, 1877, 1/5" Oct. 28, 1868; 1 high power solid eyepiece, 1 low power normal eyepiece; polarizer; substage mirror; mechanical stage, standing case.
DescriptionLarge, brass Tolles microscope, with stand B design. Curvaceous V-shaped base with two turned upright pillars to hinge joint. Carved arm to block with rack and pinion coarse focus. Body tube is brass. Draw tube has nickel plating and is calibrated. Fine focus is by means of a screw on the front of the tube that adjusts a lever on the inner tube holding the objective.
The circular stage rotates and is divided 0-90 twice around the full 360 degrees. On top of this is an elaborate, nickel-plated mechanical stage with graduated motion in x-y directions. The substage assembly includes a cup for a condenser (which is missing) that is raised and lowered by rack and pinion on a post below the stage. Further down on the post, it is nickel-plated and carries an articulated arm to which is attached a plano-concave mirror.
Accessories include an upright standing mahogany case with lock (key missing) and two pull out drawers. One drawer is fitted with circular openings lined in purple velvet for eyepieces and objectives. The other drawer has two circular openings but is not lined. It currently holds a polarizer. (No analyzer is present.) The case handle is a leather strap. It is broken. There appears to have once been a base board on which the microscope sat, which was pulled out to remove the microscope from the case. That board is currently missing. The case was also altered with notches to accommodate the instrument.
Included with the instrument are two eyepieces, one of which is a high-power Tolles solid eyepiece. The other is lower power.
There are three dated Tolles objectives, with the dates hidden inside the objective assemblies: 1/2 inch: Nov. 18, 1860, 1/4 inch: Dec. 23, 1877, 1/5 inch water: Oct. 28, 1868. The 1/4 inch is on the microscope. The canisters in the case are marked on top and bottom: "1/2," "1/5," and "1 In." A note found inside the 1-inch canister states that "The 1 inch objective (a short one) from this box, has been put on microscope 66." It is in Dr. Lewis's hand.
