DescriptionThis instrument consists of a dust-proofing housing with removable cover plate containing a prism, the instrument's operating mechanism and a graduated wavelength drum. The prism is most likely of the Pellin Broca type, made of a single piece of flint glass. The prism, fixed on a table, rotates by a cam attached to a vertical shaft. The shaft goes through the bottom of the housing. A knurled knob is found at the lower end.

A window with an index would, on the original model, been placed in such a manner that the wavelength drum can be seen directly from the eyepiece position. This particular example is different, with a brass casing equipped with mirrors and a pivoting lens to see the drum. These suggest that the telescope was attached to another instrument, a spectrographic camera, for instance, and a different system had to be shop-built in order to better see the graduation on the wavelength drum.

The slit mounting on the other optical tube appears to have been removed. A wingnut is used so the instrument does not pivot. It is supported by a tripod.
Signedon instrument: BAUSCH & LOMB OPTICAL CO.
FunctionA spectrometer is used in studying the properties of substances by means of light spectra.
