DescriptionA lamp, designed as part of a lamp and alarm bell device, possibly used for heating materials in practice of dentistry. The alarm bell appears to be missing.

The unit consists of a wooden base, a metal cone-shaped cover and a cylindrical metal container inside.

The disc-shaped brown wooden base is marked in light paint on one side, "48."

The metal outside covering, hollow and slightly conical, is raised on a series of 6 decorative dark metal claw feet. A rectangular paper label, slightly torn and discolored, is mounted near the top of the metal cover, below a curved horizontal opening cut in the metal. The label reads, "This slot is cut out for the Reception of / HAYES' HOLD-BACK METAL, / Used in connection with his / AUTOMATIC LAMP & ALARM BELL. / B.D.M. CO. -- -- Buffalo, N.Y." A circular cut-out near the base, below the label, may provide space for a heating element to be inserted into the bottom of the unit.

Hanging inside the cover, suspended from the top of the opening, is a copper cylinder topped by a wide cap and center spindle. Stamped on the lamp cap around the base of the spindle, "B.T. WHITNEY. / 2069 / 10 / 70," and on the other side, "B.D.M. Co / BUFFALO N.Y. / PATD JAN 13 1863."
