DescriptionA wooden case with windows inside of which is a balance consisting of a vertical brass pillar that holds a balace beam from which hang two flat metal pans on metal bows. The beam has attached to it a long needle pointer that reaches down almost to the base to a scale without numbers. There is a horizontal rod extending from left to right above the beam with a clamp that reaches down to the beam, and which can be manipulated from the outside to the right. There is also a vertical ruler marked "MILLIGRAMS" with a scale from 0 to 100 going downwards. Next to it is a vernier that can slide up and down the ruler and which has attached to it a chain that falls into the right-side pan.
The case includes a drawer full of accessories (see accessories) plus two knobs in front, and an additional crank on the right side near the bottom.

FunctionThis is an analytical balance that is designed to make the determination of the last decimals of a weight measurement much quicker. Up to a range of around 0.1 gram, it works like any other balance, with the user having to open the door and place new weights repeatedly. Then, instead of using finer weights, the user can gradually lower the chain onto the tray by sliding the vernier up or down. When the system is balance the user can simply read the milligrams off the ruler's scale, even up to the scale on the vernier if necessary.
Historical AttributesPrecision balance purchased by Prof. Clifford Frondel when he was twelve years old. Used by him throughout his schooling. Donated by Frondel to the Collection on April 2, 1992.
