DescriptionThis is a Leitz large traveling compound microscope with a mechanical stage (model no. 118). It is essential a Leitz stand IIa with these variations.

The V-shaped foot consists of two hinged parts that close up. The foot is made of brass coated with black enamel. The cylindrical upright is similarly shiny black brass and ends in hinge. The post is also cylindrical and but made of bright brass above the stage. It carries a black bracket for the stage, an arm and body tube. The eyepiece tube is a drawtube that is nickel-plated and graduated in millimeters. The triple nosepiece is also nickel-plated and presently holds three Leitz objectives. The coarse adjustment is by rack and pinion. The fine focus is by a non-graduated knob on top of the post.

The stage is removable for travel and attached to a bracket and clamped with a nickel-plated lever when used. It is square brass topped with vulcanite. The stage clips are removed. An iris diaphragm is built into the stage. A separate, removable mechanical stage of brass and nickel is attached on top of the stage platform by means of a C-shaped clamp that goes around the post, where it is tightened with two screws. The mechanical stage (model 118) has two verniers and a spring clip to hold the slide.

The substage illuminating apparatus (Abbe condenser and iris diaphragm with a ring mount for filters on a swing out arm) is raised and lowered by a fat screw below the stage. The substage mirror is plano-concave and mounted on a slide that attaches to a track at the bottom of the bracket that holds the stage.

          There is no accompanying case.

FunctionThis form of microscope was known as a "large traveling microscope." It had a folding foot, a stage and mirror that folded up flat, and a drawtube that closed up completely in order to reduce the packing dimensions of the instrument. It came in a fitted case. Field workers and inspectors found this sort useful to take on the road.
