DescriptionThis is a keystone box for an early octant. The hinges are made of wire. The exterior is painted a teal color.

The interior of the lid is marked in pencil and chalk with numerals from observations and calculations. There are also a couple of names penned in ink and pencil, but they are very hard to read. One in the center may read, "Caleb Hodges," and the other nearer the hinge, "James Hickey" with a big flourish at the end.

The box has the trade card of Adrian Br. Hicks, 1794, but at present holds an octant by signed E. & G.W. Blunt and dating from the mid-19th century.

For full trade card text, see photo or inscription field.
