          DescriptionWood casting pattern for a host chronograph drum end. Listed in the "Chronographs" section of the original Bond Pattern inventory (1988). The outer edge of the object is damaged and there is a signifcant crack across its diameter.

          There is a very faint inscription on one side of the drum apparently done in red crayon or wax pencil. On the reverse there is another description in the same medium that begins "2. . .".

          FunctionBefore sand casting an instrument part from brass or other metal, a foundry pattern is made from wood or metal. The pattern is a replica of the part to be cast. The pattern is pressed into sand, creating a cavity into which the molten metal will be poured.

          Historical AttributesThese foundry patterns came from the workshop of William Bond & Son. Some of the patterns are associated with astronomical regulators and instruments used at the Harvard College Observatory. These instruments are currently in the Harvard Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments.
