Material
DescriptionA lunar globe made of two metal hemispheres is mounted on top of a plastic laboratory bottle's cap. The bottle is held by a metal strap to a square block of wood, which is painted black. A handle is attached to the bottle and its axis goes through one end of the strap to the other. The handle turns a rubber wheel inside the bottle. A thick ribbon of elastic (like a wide and long elastic band) is turned by the wheel and causes the globe to turn atop the bottle. The elastic is presently off the wheel and no longer causes the globe to rotate.
The globe is blue and grey and marked with lunar features such as the mare and craters. The sites of soft landings and impacts by lunar spacecraft are indicated on the globe with the name of the probe and its date of landing. These include both Russian and American spacecraft:
Lunik 2 (13 September 1959)
Ranger 4 (26 April 1962)
Ranger 6 (2 February 1964)
Ranger 7 (31 July 1964)
Ranger 8 (20 February 1965)
Ranger 9 (24 March 1965)
Luna 9 (3 February 1966)
Surveyor 1 (6 February 1966)
