DescriptionRectangular bamboo slide rule with three slides, white-faced (perhaps celluloid). The top and bottom slides are bolted to L-shaped metal pieces on both sides of both ends of the slides. The center slide moves to left and right. A clear glass runner, with a metal and celluloid (?) frame and a vertical indicating line, also moves left and right.

The face of the rule is printed with twelve scales. Printed in red near the top of the top, fixed slide is a log log scale, "LL/0", also labeled "e^-x", with values descending from .999 to .990. Printed to the right of the scale are the numbers -0.001 and -0.01, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left. Directly below this scale is a "K" scale, labeled "x^3", composed of three logarithmic scales (values 1 to 10, 10 to 100, and 100 to 1000, from left to right) placed side by side. Printed third from the top along the top slide is an "A" scale, for "x^2", composed of two logarithmic scales (values 1 to 10, on the left, and 10 to 100, on the right) placed side by side.

Printed along the bottom edge of the top, fixed slide is a logarithmic scale "DF", or "[pi]x", with values wrapping around from [pi] to 10, then from 1 to [pi]. An identical scale, "CF", is printed along the top edge of the center, moveable slide.

Printed in red second from the top along the center slide is an inverted scale "CIF", labeled "1/([pi]x)". This has values descending from 3.2 to 1, then from 10 to 3.1. Below this, also printed in red, is an inverted scale "CI", for "1/x", with values descending from 10 to 1.

Printed along the bottom edge of the center slide is a logarithmic "C" scale, labeled "x", carrying values 1 to 10. An identical scale "D" is printed along the top edge of the bottom, fixed slide.

Printed along the center of the bottom slide are two logarithmic scales labeled "[root]x", "R_1" and "R_2". The top scale, "R_1", has values ascending from 1 to 3.15. The bottom scale, "R_2", carries values 3.15 to 10.

Printed near the bottom edge of the bottom slide is a log log scale "LL0", for "e^x". This has values ascending from 1.001 to 1.01. Printed directly to the right of this scale are the values 0.001 and 0.01, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right.

The back of the rule is likewise printed with twelve scales. Printed near the top of the top, fixed slide is the scale "L", labeled "log x". This has values ranging from 0 to 1.

Below the "L" scale are three scales printed in red, and labeled for e^-x. Second from the top is the "LL/1" scale, with values descending from .99 to .905. Printed directly to the right of this scale are the values -0.01 and -0.1, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left. Below the "LL/1" scale is an "LL/2" scale, with values descending from .905 to 1/e. Directly to the right of this are the values -0.1 and -1.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left. Printed along the bottom edge of the top slide is an "LL/3" scale, with values descending from 1/e to .0001. To the right of this are the values -1.0 and -10.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left.

Printed along the top edge of the center, moveable slide is a "T" scale with two sets of values. The values printed in black ascend from 5.5 to 45; those printed in red descend from 84.3 to 45. Printed directly to the right of this scale are, in black, the values 0.1 and 1.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right and, in red, the values 10.0 and 1, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left. Below this is a scale for "SecT" (in red) and "SRT" (in black). The "SecT" values descend from 89.4 to 84.3; the "SRT" values ascend from .6 to 5.7. Printed to the right of the scale are, in black, the values 0.01 and 0.1, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right and, in red, the values 100.0 and 10.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the left. Below the "SecT"/"SRT" scale is a scale for "Cos" (in green) and "S" (in black). The "Cos" values descend from 84.3 to 0; the "S" values ascend from 5.7 to 90. Printed directly to the right of the scale are the values 0.1 and 1.0, with two arrows between them: a black arrow pointing towards the right, and a green arrow pointing towards the left.

Printed along the bottom edge of the center slide is a logarithmic "C" scale, labeled "x" and carrying values from 1 to 10. Along the top edge of the bottom, fixed slide is an identical "D" scale.

Second from the top along the bottom slide is a log log scale "LL3" with values ascending from e to 200,000. To the right of this are the values 1.0 and 10.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right. Third from the top along the bottom slide is a log log scale "LL2", with values ranging from 1.105 to e. To the right of this are the values 0.1 and 1.0, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right. Near the bottom of the bottom slide is a log log scale "LL1", carrying values from 1.01 to 1.105. To the right of the scale are the values 0.01 and 0.1, with an arrow between them pointing towards the right.

The slide rule is stored in a brown leather case with flap closure and a detachable belt loop.
Signedon the center slide right edge (on front and reverse sides), maker's logo: POST [in an oval] on front face, bottom slide, top right: FREDERICK / POST on reverse face, top fixed slide, upper right: HEMMI on reverse face, lower fixed slide, upper right: JAPAN top edge of cursor: HEMMI JAPAN on lower edge of cursor: POST [in oval] flap of case: POST [in oval]
Inscribedface, top fixed slide, bottom right: VERSALOG / 1460 on flap of case: VERSALOG
Curatorial RemarksThe date code "VE" indicates that this slide rule was manufactured in May 1971. For details see this <a href="XXXX" target="_blank">http://sliderule.ozmanor.com/sidebar/sb-002-hemmi-date-codes.html</a>. The Versalog II slide rules were marked "Versalog", never "Versalog II".
FunctionFor solving mathematics problems, including problems involving multiple factors, multiplication, division, powers, roots, and trigonometric problems. For details, see the Versalog II manual (primary sources).
