          DescriptionWooden lantern with tin roof and chimney. Four doors open on one side. Interior is black. Projection lens in brass optical tube. Wooden slide holder. Originally burned whale oil.

          English style but in crude colonial workmanship.

          Historical AttributesThis instrument was a gift to Harvard College after the fire of 1764 by Robert Hale of Beverly. Hale may have been the original maker. The apparatus was repaired and improved by John Prince, Salem MA, in 1794. Prince added the chimney.
