FunctionSuch bell jars were common in experiments requiring a vacuum. Though this one was used in a chemistry department in the middle of the twentieth century, it is similar to what experimenters would have employed on the W. & S. Jones air-pump (to which it is associated right now).
Historical AttributesCollected from the estate of Robert Hutton, Professor of Chemistry at Brandeis University. Dr. Hutton was a former student of Professor Frank Westheimer from Harvard's Department of Chemistry. It was transferred from Dr. Westheimer's lab to Harvard's Mallinkrodt Hall in 1955.
