DescriptionPortable stereoscope with two lenses and a side screw made to adjust the width between the eyes. A scale indicates the amount. It also has two folding and removable metallic frames designed to support the instrument in front of the viewer's eyes (perhaps on top of a helmet). It was designed for military purposes. It is stored in a leather case when not in use.

FunctionThis instrument was used primarily for photogrammetry, i.e. the science or art of obtaining reliable measurements by means of photographs. Stereoscopic photographs of aerial views would be put side by side in front of the viewer. These would be seen through the adjustable eyepiece and would become one 3D representation of the photographed terrain relief. Measurement on that terrain can thereafter be made.
