DescriptionThe lettering guide is stored in a rectangular paper envelope. Instrument information is written by hand on both sides of the envelope.
The lettering guide is a plastic stencil rule of model no. 175. The stencil ruler is divided into three bands. The top and bottom band are slightly darker colored than the central band. The following symbols are carved into the top band of the rule: 2 4 3 5 6 7 8 9 0 A B CGD EF HL J K M N O PRT S UV W X. A set of symbols, consisting of various squares, triangles, circles, moons, etc. is carved into the central band of both stencil rules. T the far right end of the central band on both stencil rulers, there is a small, round, green plastic button that slides in a horizontal hole.

FunctionThe lettering guide is used for inscribing various objects. Users trace the stenciled symbols onto the surface below. The set is not limited to stenciling flat surfaces because the rulers are made of bendable plastic.
ProvenanceUsed by Prof. Benjamin M. Shaub, Department of Geology, Smith College, Northampton, MA 01063. Prof. He used this lettering guide while studying Mechanical Engineering at Sibley College, Cornell (he graduated in 1923). Shaub gifted a total of 11 instruments to the Collection, inventory #s 1997-1-1997 thru 1997-1-2007.
