Hagger & Brother
This firm Hagger & Brother was formed by two brothers, William G. Hagger (b. 1800 in Boston) and John W. Hagger (1806-1858). They were the sons of Benjamin King Hagger (1769-1834).
Benjamin King Hagger is listed as a mathematical instrument maker in Boston in 1789. He moved to Baltimore around 1816 or 1817. His son, John W. Hagger joined him in a partnership in about 1824. This partnership lasted until the father's death, and Baltimore directories list the firm Benjamin K. Hagger and Son from 1824 to 1838. For a while, John W. Hagger was in business by himself, before partnering with his elder brother William. The Baltimore directories list Hagger & Bro. as nautical instrument makers and sellers of chronometers from 1842 to 1861 at 59 W. Pratt Street.
Another nautical instrument maker, James S. Hagger & Co. down the street from Hagger & Bro. (at 39 1/2 W. Pratt St.) was likely another relative's business.
