Daniel Treadwell

Born in Ipswich, Massachusetts, Daniel Treadwell was an inventor of a machine for making wooden screws, a powered printing press, a machine for spinning hemp cordage, and other devices. He performed surveying work for the city of Boston in 1825, devised turnouts for railways on a single track in 1826, and supplied the Charlestown Navy Yard with machines to make cordage for the U.S. Navy.

In 1829, Treadwell received an honorary degree from Harvard. He lectured at Harvard College and was the Rumford Professor on the Applicatino of Science to the Useful Arts from 1834 to 1845.

In 1822, he founded the Boston Journal of Philosophy and Arts with Dr. John Ware. His publications include The Relations of Science to the Useful Arts (Boston, 1855); On the Practicability of constructing a Cannon of Great Calibre (Cambridge, 1856); and On the Construction of Hooped Cannon (Cambridge, 1864).

He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
