FunctionEudiometers are instruments for measuring the change in volume of a gas mixture brought about by a chemical reaction.
The eudiometer would be filled completely with water or sometimes another liquid like oil or mercury, and placed upright with its mouth into a reservoir of the same liquid. If the gases react spontaneously, they can be introduced from the bottom displacing some liquid from the closed end at the top of the tube, the total volume and its evolution can be exactly measured with the scale. Otherwise, the gases' volumes can be measured separately in eudiometers, then ignited and the results of the reaction introduced into another eudiometer to measure the change in volume.
