          DescriptionThe horizontal dial and small magnetic compass are on a rectangular brass plate with three leveling screws. The string gnomon and plummet are connected to a hinged support that folds against the plate for storage. The gnomon is designed for a latitude of approximately 40°. The chapter ring is divided into eight regions, seven of which are subdivided into 8ths. The compass rose is divided into four points, rectangular, each marked with the Kanji for the cardinal directions.

          Inscription(s): The is a paper glued to the inside of the cover that is marked with 31 oriental characters. The bottom of the box is marked with two oriental characters.

          FunctionTime finding at one latitude after orienting the gnomon to point toward true North.
