DescriptionA horizontal brass cylinder on a tripod foot, with glass caps, would contain inside a magnetic bar, suspended from a thread (resistant to torsion) coming down the vertical glass tube (25cm). Scale on top of cap to adjust zero torsion of the thread.

The magnetic iron bar is now missing.
        Signedunsigned
        Curatorial RemarksMagnet. iron bar missing.
FunctionTo determine the strength of magnetic fields. Reading given by a torsion scale on top of the glass tube that registers the tendency of the magnetic bar to turn in the presence of magnetic fields.

        From Card:
"To determine the zero setting on the torsion scale at the top of the glass tube a brass bar with a small hook at its center is fastened to the suspension and the adjustment made. Then the magnetised iron bar is substituted and the new setting read, to give the deflection."
ProvenanceDavid Wheatland purchased from Saul Moskowitz, Marblehead, Massachusetts, June 27, 1978 (catalog 116, #243). Donated to CHSI 1985.
