DescriptionBlackened removable brass suspension tube on a square metal viewing box with three windows. Box stands on a round wooden base with a metallic slide bracket on bottom.

Inside the metal box stands a small round metallic mirror held from below by a vertical wire attached to a (probably magnetized) metallic bearing a few inches below.

Metallic parts and base marked a and b. Part c is most likely the metallic bracket below them. Possibly part of a set with 0168 & 0169.
        Signedunsigned
InscribedStamped into the bottom of wood base is "PHYSICS 3"
FunctionThis device measures the horizontal strength and direction of an unknown magnetic field. Inside the box is a mirror attached to a magnetic object below which rotates to align itself with the sum-total of the present magnetic fields. One can know the strength and direction of any unknown magnetic fields by seeing the effect on the mirror's direction of the presence of magnetic objects of known strength, so for instance one would take a measurement with and without a known magnet nearby. The change in angle could be determined very accurately by using light reflected off the mirror.
