DescriptionThis proportional compass is made of brass with steel points. It has a brass cursor that slides up and down the two legs and a wing nut to lock it in position. The scales on both arms are for dividing a line into equal parts. The positions for the cursor are given in terms of fractions:

          arm a
          1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/7

          arm b
          7/8, 6/7, 5/6, 4/5, 3/4, 5/7, 2/3, 5/8, 3/5, 4/7, 3/7, 2/5, 3/8, 2/7

The case is made of wood covered with leather given a poppy-seed finish (to make it appear as sharkskin). It is lined with green parchment and red velvet. It has a slide-on top.
