DescriptionA hydrometer consisting of a glass cylinder filled with air connected at one end to a glass sphere filled with lead shot, and at the other end to a long narrow stem that contains a paper scale wrapped inside. Its scale starts at 0 on the far edge of the stem and rises to 25 near the air-filled cylinder. Its units are very likely to be Baumé, in which 0 is the density of water.

FunctionFor liquids with a density equal or greater than that of water. One lets the hydrometer float on the liquid and then one takes a reading at the height indicated by the liquid's surface.
ProvenanceAcquired with other instruments from the Schlaginweit Expedition in Germany, 1959 (Object 31). Donated to CHSI August 17, 1988.
Historical AttributesThis instrument appears to have been to the Schlaginweit Expedition to Central Asia between 1854 and 1858.
