        DescriptionA hydrometer consisting of a glass vessel with an air-filled cylinder connected through a long neck to a spherical bulb filled with mercury, and at the other end connected to a long, narrow glass stem that contains a paper scale wrapped inside. The instrument's scale goes from 0 at the top, to 60 near the air-filled bulb.

        FunctionFor liquids with a density equal or greater than that of water. One lets the hydrometer float on the liquid and then one takes a reading at the height indicated by the liquid's surface.
        ProvenanceAcquired with other instruments from the Schlaginweit Expedition in Germany, 1959 (Object 0). Donated to CHSI August 17, 1988.
        Historical AttributesThis instrument appears to have been to the Schlaginweit Expedition to Central Asia between 1854 and 1858.
