FunctionThis is a precise, narrowly ranged hydrometer to determine the specific gravity of liquids. It was part of a series of many hydrometers of which three survive: 4440, 4441 and 4442.
As with most hydrometers, one would determine a liquid's specific gravity by letting it float in the liquid and observing the level that the surface reached on the hydrometer's scale.
