DescriptionA hydrometer consisting of a narrow stem with a paper scale inside, which then widens to a cylindrical air filled section, which gradually narrows to a narrow tip connected to a spherical, mercury filled bulb.
Its scale goes from 1.750 to 1.500.

Inscribedmarked on stem base: Specific Gravity tp. 60°F
marked on top of case: 1.500 - 1.750
FunctionThis is a precise, narrowly ranged hydrometer to determine the specific gravity of liquids. It was part of a series of many hydrometers of which three survive: 4440, 4441 and 4442.
As with most hydrometers, one would determine a liquid's specific gravity by letting it float in the liquid and observing the level that the surface reached on the hydrometer's scale.
