DescriptionA hydrometer consisting of a thin glass stem that connects to a much wider cylindrical air-filled bulb that has a spherical glass bulb at its end about one-third with mercury that ends in a small cylindrical tip. The stem has a paper scale that goes from 1.180 to 1.120.
Signedmarked on stem: Dr. H. Geissler Nachf. Frz. Müller in Bonn.
Inscribednear signature: Specif. Gewicht temp 15°Cels on cardboard case: Personal Property of Prof. T.W. Richards [and] 1.12/1.18
FunctionThis is a very precise and narrowly ranged hydrometer to determine the specific gravity of liquids close in density to salt water.

As with most hydrometers, one would determine a liquid's specific gravity by letting it float in the liquid and observing the level that the surface reached on the hydrometer's scale.
