DescriptionThis is a Powell & Lealand binocular compound microscope. The instrument is constructed entirely of brass and has a unique "kettle drum stand" that combines both the foot and pillar. The binocular body has a single nosepiece and is attached to a horizontal arm. Coarse focus is by rack and pinion. Fine adjustment is by a screw located on the side of the arm.
There is a square mechanical stage with a rotating top. There are two knobs on the stage, one permitting front to back movement, the other side to side movement. An elaborate substage is fitted beneath the stage and it includes an achromatic condenser, disc diaphragms, and a disc of central stops. Below is a mirror mounted on the lower end of the central pillar.
This microscope is accompanied by a standing wooden case.
