Bibliography
DescriptionThis is a Verick No.4 compound laboratory microscope. It has a horseshoe-shaped base that carries a single rectangular pillar with a hinge. The pillar supports a round post, which carries a bracket that holds a brass sleeve. The body tube slides in this sleeve. The coarse focus is by sliding eyepiece draw tube. The body tube can be extended from 140 to 190 mm. The fine adjustment is by knob located on top of the post.
There is a brass square stage covered with black glass. There are two brass stage clips. Mounted beneath the stage by means of a dovetailed sliding plate, there is sleeve holding a removable condenser with a diaphragm wheel. Another dovetail enables a small bull's eye condenser (currently stored in the case) to be secured to a corner of the stage. There is also a substage mirror on a swinging arm.
The underside of the horseshoe base is covered in green leather.
This instrument is accompanied by a flat wooden case with a steel key. The case is dovetailed mahogany, with a brass handle on the right hand side. There are two compartments with removable lids. Areas are cushioned in purple velvet. The interior of the lid has a pillow of green (faded) silk backed by green faux leather. A ribbon permits one to remove the pillow to access any papers stored between it and the lid.
The instrument comes with three oculars marked 1, 2, and 3.
Five objectives are marked 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8. They are stored in their own little box in sockets marked 0, 2, and 6 plus two unlabeld sockets cut into a wood block. The serial number of the microscope, 1055, is stamped on the wooden block, too. The box is made of wood covered in green leather and padded with white silk; it has brass hardware.
Two cup diaphragms also have their own sockets in the wood block inside the little objective box. A third cup diaphragm is mounted in the brass socket which can be slid into the substage sleeve in place of the condenser presently there. At present it is stored in one of the case's lidded compartments.
That compartment also houses two water immersion objectives, both No. 10, from Vérick and Hartnack in their original canisters. The Vérick objective has a correction collar.
Other accessories stored in the case include a revolving double nosepiece; a double-sided spatula of nickel-plated metal, and a blue glass filter.
