DescriptionThis is a drum microscope of the French form in the style of George Oberhauser.
The substage concave mirror is held in a brass drum with an aperture to permit light to reach the mirror. The mirror is tilted by means of a knob on the outside of the drum. On top of the drum is a rectangular stage. Above the stage is a sleeve that carries the body tube. There is no ocular draw tube. Coarse focus is by drawing the body tube. Fine focusing is by means of a screw lifting the stage. The round base is lead-filled brass that is painted green. The microscope base is threaded in order to stand on top of the case in a wooden socket, or it can be stood on its own on a table.
The microscope has one ocular and one convertible objective on the nosepiece.
The flat mahogany case is fitted with compartments. Parts are cushioned with green wool. On the outer lid is a turned wooden socket with a threaded rod in the center. It is cushioned by black wool.
Accessories include two steel dissecting needles with ebony handles stored inside the lid. In a covered chamber are 7 plain glass slides, a circular cover slip, 10 prepared slides with paper covers and French handwriting of specimen names; a brass rimmed wet trough, and some pieces of quartz.
