DescriptionThis brass drum microscope is of the French pattern.
The substage mirror is held in a brass drum with an aperture to permit light to reach the mirror. The mirror is tilted by means of a knob on the outside of the drum. On top of the drum is a rectangular stage. Above the stage is a sleeve that carries the body tube, which has an ocular draw tube. Coarse focus is by draw tube. Fine focusing is by means of a screw lifting the stage. The round base of hard lead alloy is painted green.
Attached to the microscope, there is one ocular marked 3 and one objective on a nosepiece marked 4. A spare nosepiece marked 7 with a convertible objective is stored in the case. These have large diameter male threads of 23.3 mm O.D. and 40 threads/inch, and are probably Whitworth profile.
This drum microscope has its original optics and table of magnifications. The case and table bear the same serial number: 13780.
The flat mahogany case is dovetailed. It has a padded cushion of gree silk in the lid. Other parts are cushioned with green velvet. There is a steel key. In a covered chamber are brass tweezers, two dissecting needles with ebony handles (one is missing the needle, but has a sewing needle as replacement), a brush with a quill handle, a scalpel with an ebony handle, and a glass rod with a point for use as a dropper.
