DescriptionThis is a Molteni medium drum compound microscope. The instrument comprises a monocular body mounted in a cylindrical drum, which sits on top of a heavy circular base. The base is filled with lead. The drum is cut away at the rectangular stage and then again at mirror level. The stage has two brass stage clips. Below the stage is a slot for a rotating disc diaphragm and a rotating plano-concave mirror on a horizontal rod.
The ocular draw tube slides into a body tube adjustable by rack and pinion. There is an eyepiece on the tube and an objective mounted at the lower end. A spare eyepiece is in the case.
This instrument is stored inside a mahogany, dovetailed case. Parts are cushioned with green wool cloth. Inside the case is the distributor's trade card. A wood-splint pill box holds a spare objective.
A dealer's trade card is in the lid. Handwritten in French on it is a magnification table.
