        Material
DescriptionA long optical tube with an eyepiece at one end and inside, Wollaston and Nicol prisms. There is also a graduated circle (0-360) divided in single degrees to determine the angle of polarization. The instrument is stored in a felt-lined case.

A short description (in German) is provided at the following website.
Signedon tube: Photo-polarimètre de Mr. Cornu / Mon. Jules Duboscq / Ph. Pellin / Paris.
FunctionThis instrument was designed by Cornu especially to determine the polarization of atmospheric light. It was thus used in meteorology. The instrument shows three vertical strips of light. One determines the plane of polarization of light by rotating the analyzer until the instensities of the strips are equal.
ProvenanceFrom the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory, Milton, MA.
