DescriptionThis is a Beck microscope oil lamp. It has a ring-shaped base of cast brass with a fixed vertical brass rectangular post. The post is topped by a knob. A spring clamp moves up and down the post, caring an arm that holds the glass oil tank, its tin lantern shade, and a bull's eye condensing lens. The tank is clear blown glass and has a lipped filling hole. The hardware for the wick is brass. The braided rope wick is present. The lantern shade is blackened brass like the arm, and has two glass windows held in spring clamps, one on each side. The narrow chimney is cyllindrical.

On either side of the arm, there are two upright metal tubes to which the condenser is fork-mounted. A retaining strut with a locking screw is attached to the end of the arm and the fork mount. It keeps the lens at the desired angle. From the front center of the fork mount, there extends a brass dovetailed leg at an angle. This leg mates with a brass dovetailed slide, which carries a swiveling fork mount. The latter holds the condensing lens in a brass cell. The glass lens is concave-convex.
