FunctionThis is an x-ray tube for radiography. The rays are produced in the middle section and since the glass is opaque for x-rays, they can only exit the tube through the window in front. In this particular one, the target itself has a copper extension with a window in it presumably for better focusing and restricting the direction of the rays to one direction.
