FunctionAccording to the B & L catalogue of 1900, the "Filar Micrometer is used for making the most accurate measurements possible under the microscope. The measuring apparatus consists of a horizontal cross-hair stretched across the field, a vertical reference cross-hair adjustable so that it may be made to coincide with the edge of the object to be measured and a moveable cross-hair moved by means of an accurate micrometer screw with graduated head reading to 0.005 mm. In the field, a comb with teeth corresponding with one revolution of the screw serves to record the number of revolutions."
