          DescriptionTwo small compound microscopes sit in parallel on a shared base that is attached to a pedestal on a three feet. The microscopes are made of brass painted with black enamel. Their optical tubes are nickel-plated. The shared pedestal is shiny brass and the three feet have a black crackle finish.

          The microscopes are not identical. The one on the proper left of the instrument has a coarse adjustment by rack and pinion of the optical tube. Fine adjustment is by a micrometer drum on the eyepiece. The microscope on the proper right has a fixed coarse focus. Fine focus is by another screw-micrometer eyepiece.

          Neither microscope has a visible objective at the bottom. The microscope on the proper left has a scale on its tube from 0.4 - 1.4 with a sliding mechanism. The lower end of the optical tube of the microscope on the proper right has a large hollow space painted white to bounce in light.

          The two microscopes share a long, rectangular stage operated longitudinally by pulling a nickel-plated knob and turning a brass screw. Different things are fixed on top of this stage below each microscope. The proper microscope has a rectangular stage with two stage clips and a slot to receive light from a substage concave / plane mirror. A fine adjustment screw is alongside the stage. The proper left microscope has a brass trough covered in glass. Inside the trough is a finely divided silver scale running from 0-100 mm. (A tag on the instrument says that the scale is also marked "8KNEK 1906.")

          FunctionThis two-microscope linear micrometer is for measuring linear distances between points on a specimen that would be too far apart to fit in the field of view of a single microscope. The user would locate a point on the specimen by looking through one microscope and read off its baseline position on the scale under the second microscope. Then the user would slide the stage to pick up another point on the specimen. The user would then take another scale reading from the second microscope. The difference in the readings would give the linear distance between the points on the specimen.
