        Material
DescriptionLarge arc lamp in black crackle finish with condenser lens and carbon electrodes that are electronically controlled. In the path of the light that is generated is a pivoting mirror (missing here), which is used with a micro-projector microscope that was mounted on the top of the lamp. What was seen in the microscope was projected at the same time on a screen. This example has a black felt shade supported by a metallic structure fixed in the lamp. Perhaps the mirror was removed on purpose here so the light would not be reflected up, passing straight through instead.

The lamp runs on 12 amps current and uses 5.6 mm cored copper coated carbons. The power source is connected to a type 42-44-65 ballast resistance, similar to 1997-1-0768.
Signedon plaque: BAUSCH & LOMB OPTICAL CO.
Curatorial RemarksThough not mention anywhere, it is highly probable that the ballast resistance with inventory number 1997-1-0768 was actually used with this arc lamp.
FunctionUsed in combination with a microscope, it produces an intense light that illuminates specimens in all types of microscopic studies.

In an ad from the May 3, 1957 Science magazine this lamp is thus described: "No flicker! No flare! Provides uniformly intense light for brilliant, vivid screen images--60 minutes without interruption! Efficient heat-control system eliminates need for cumbersome water cells and color-distorting coolants ... protects slides, ensures true color projection."
