DescriptionHeavy and large round cast iron base. Two pillars rise from the base and each carry an arched bridge. The bridges meet in a collar that holds the fixed vertical tube of the microscope. The top of the tube carries a telescoping projection eyepiece and a photographic sleeve for making contact between the microscope and the camera.
The lower part of the tube with the objective is beneath the bridges and collar. Here a horizontal epi illuminator goes between the tube and the objective. The illuminator has an iris diaphragm and an adjustable 90° prism reaching into the objective's aperture.
The stage is round and rotates. It carries a rectangular mechanical stage with x-y motion. The stage is attached to a column that is slides through a slip ring with a locking screw. The ring is attached to a bracket which carries the rack and pinion to adjust the stage up and down. The rear of the bracket is attached to vertical structure on the back of the base. It has fine motion up and down on this by means of a long-shafted vertical screw.
Focus is by raising or lower the stage: coarse by rack and pinion, fine by the vertical screw.
The instrument used to be stored under a flimsy celluloid(?) hood (now cataloged as 1279b). The hood had a small round tag reading "from Byerly 10-13-69."
