DescriptionThe base of this instrument, made of metal painted black, is figure-eight-shaped with a circular ear emerging from each of the four "corners". The ears have screw holes in them and could serve to attach the instrument to a surface beneath. Attached to the top of the base, a case contains two tightly wound spools of gold-colored wire; the top half of the case has slatted windows between strips of black metal making the coils visible. The coils constitute electromagnets. On top of the spool case, is a plate of metal, the outline of which is a figure eight. On both sides of the plate, there are insulated wires running from a pair of electrical contacts. Sitting atop this plate is a black band that runs over top a round component that is obscured from view, but that acts as the rotor. There is an angled metal holder and adjustment screw for a black rectangular block visible on one side. This black rectangle acts as the brush for connecting with the motor's split ring. As it wears away, the block can be moved closer by loosening the adjustment screw. The details of the split ring and brush configuration are obscured by the black band casing. On top of this black band is the nameplate. A long thin metal rod (now quite rusted) runs through both sides of the obscured round component and extends quite far to one side of the instrument. Additional metal mechanisms, including at least one binding post, are affixed on either side of the round component.
