DescriptionThis octagonal brass sundial has three turned feet. The dial plate is plain except for the maker’s signature which is engraved opposite the hinge.

The compass is silvered divided into quarters which are further divided on the perimeter into 72 sections. There is a decorative wind rose in the center. Each quadrant is engraved with the abbreviation for the corresponding cardinal direction. There is an arrow for magnetic declination at about 15° west. The compass needle is thin with a pointed arrow tip.

The equatorial ring of this dial is three-quarters of a circle and the top is engraved with an hour scale. The hour scale is marked 3-XII-9. The inside surface of the ring is engraved with lines indicating half-hour measurements. The sundial's gnomon is a pin mounted to the center of a sqaured, rotating bar that bridges the 6 o'clock hours.

The latitude arm is marked from 2° to 90° every 10° and is further divided by 2° increments.

The underside of the compass box is engraved with a gazetteer of 29 European cities and their latitudes.

This sundial has a fitted, octagonal, green paper case.
