DescriptionMedium drum compound microscope in the French pattern. Rack and pinion focus of the body tube. Also ocular draw tube. Bull's eye lens on double ball joint attached to front of body tube. Small rectangular stage of darkened brass.. Concave substage mirror. Round base filled with lead. There is one eyepiece and a convertible objective.
With fitted wood case. One glass slide with magnifying well. Broken circular glass cover slip. Brass tweezers.

Historical AttributesThis microscope belonged to Dr. Charles Cotton (1788-1870), a naval surgeon who served on the Frigate USS Constitution. Dr. Cotton attended Harvard College (AB 1808). He received his AM from Brown in 1813 and his MD in 1813, being Brown's first MD. After resigning from the Navy, he worked as a surgeon in Newport, RI.
