          DescriptionThis instrument consist of a horizontal adjustable slit (optical tube at the back) on which the light coming from a powerful spark is shone. (See, for instance 1996-1-0668, which was also made by this maker.) The light, after passing trough the slit, travels to a first mirror (right in the picture) and is reflected towards a glass plate and prism arrangement, seen in the middle of the picture here.

          This arrangement consists of a quartz prism, which, together with a quartz plate, forms a wedge cell into which is placed the liquid under examination. A semi-spherical cavity has been carved to receive the rotating block of quartz of similar shape. The rotation of this latter piece of quartz is measured on the graduated circle. The rotation is controlled by a micrometric screw and the divisions can be seen by means of a magnifying telescope lens.

          After the light has passed through this liquid and prism arrangement, it is reflected again on a convex mirror (left in the picture) and travels towards a fixed slit (missing here). Coming out of the slit, the light would then enter a spectrograph, such as the one seen in HA0113 or HA0114.

          The whole instrument is supported by heavy table, under which are three leveling screws.

          FunctionHere is the description given in the 1929 Hilger catalogue: "The instrument is stood on the bench in front of the Spectrograph with which it is to be used, and with the plate with rectangular aperture parallel to the slit jaws of the spectrograph and 8 mms from them. Having put the cell in position on its table with the quartz plate pressed in position with grease, such as vaseline, and inserted an adjusting prism of quartz, the horizontal slit of the apparatus should be illuminated by the spark.

          When the circle is turned so that the flat face of the quartz hemi-cylinder is parallel to the flat plate of the cell, an image of the slit should be focussed [sic] on that of the spectrograph, and upon looking into the camera of the spectrograph an image of the light source should appear in the centre of the camera lens. The mounts for the concave mirrors have been adjusted so that the image is formed at the centre of the rectangular aperture. Should the adjustment have been altered during transit the mirror M 2 [left in the picture] may be turned so that the image is brought into position; M 1 [right in the picture] should be adjusted, if necessary, so that the face of the cell is covered with light when S 1 is opened wide.

          When, therefore, a spectrogram is taken, a slanting spectrum results, which intersects the standard spectrum, which is first taken with the liquid prism not in position. The two spectra cross at a point, for which it is true that the total deviation caused by liquid and quartz is zero. The refractive index (u) of the liquid for this wavelength is calculated [from a formula, given in the text.]
