DescriptionThis etui contains an early form of screw-barrel microscope made of silver with the lens held in a lignum vitae eyepiece. The small glass vial has a silver screw cap and slips into a cavity that is too large for it. The three ivory slides have been blackened. The insert for the wet cell slide is missing. The forceps is silver. There is a silver wrench with an open, threaded circle at the end. A magnifying lens would be screwed in here for use with opaque specimens. There appears to be a place in the etui that might have held a specimen spike or forceps, but none is present now.

The etui is formed of wood with silver frames and is covered in leather.
