Material
Accessoriesocular (1); objectives (6); fish plate; substage cone diaphragm; round spring slide holder; stage forceps; bull's eye condenser; wet specimen glass cup; rotating slide speciment holder with black and white disks; small black and white disks as bead on cord; brass spring; spare collar from an ocular; pyramidal box.
DescriptionThe body of this Culpeper-type microscope is made of oak tubes and turned lignum vitae. The draw tube is covered with green vellum, and outer tube with shagreen. The green vellum has gold decorations, which are badly worn, and five rings formed by dotted black ink to aid the user in focusing the microscope.
The body tube is held aloft on a brass ring fixed to the top of three curving brass pillars, which bend around the brass stage and secure it. A bull's eye lens is currently attached to the stage.
The pillars are screwed to the top of an octagonal mahogany chest The substage mirror is fixed to the chest. There is a single drawer in the chest with a ring pull.
Accessories in the drawer include a frog plate with a blued steel spring clip on the underside, and 3 green silk ribbons attached to a brass bar. Also attached is a black cord with a drum-shaped bead that is a tiny black-and-white disk. There are 5 objectives in the drawer, a blackened ivory cone diaphragm, a spring frame to hold slides, a spinning disk with 8 circular apertures for prepared specimens (only 4 still have mica in them) and 2 apertures holding a blackened ivory and an ivory disk. There is also round glass wet-specimen holder, an extra brass ring (which likely once had a spare ocular), and brass spring.
The case is pyramidal. It has a drawer at the bottom, which is empty.
This instrument is identical to CHSI inv. 1181.
