DescriptionMade of brass, this chest microscope has a tube that holds the ocular and objective lenses sitting in a ring on a bracket screwed to the top of square brass post. The post is hinged to the base of the wooden storage chest. The stage is raised and lowered with rackwork on the post in order to focus.
The stage has three "lobes" protruding from its sides for the purpose of holding stage accessories.There is a brass spring underneath. The concave substage mirror is fork-mounted to a swinging arm, which is raised and lowered on the post in a slot and secured with a locking screw
The mahogany case is dovetailed and fitted, padded with green silk, and has a lock. The top of the case has a wooden insert where a plaque originally was.
Accessories include 6 objectives (nos. 1-6); 1 eyepiece with a sliding cover; a lieberkuhn in a brass box; 2 spring stagse to hold slides; 2 live boxes; a cup diaphragm; a wheel diaphragm; a cylindrical ivory box with screw caps on both ends to hold mica cover slips and brass springs; 2 large wooden slides with round and oval mica windows; 1 ivory slide; steel tweezers with a long pin at the back end; smaller brass tweezers; a frog plate; magnifying glass with brass handle; part of an objective; and 2 ivory rings (partly broken).
There is a rectangular block of painted soft wood, which formerly served as a display stand. It is not original to the instrument.
